Pregnancy complicated by Gestational diabetes can be associated with many potentially serious clinical problems. Fortunately, the outlook for a healthy baby has greatly improved for women with diabetes. In many situations, Gestational diabetes may be managed through careful meal planning. When diet control is not enough, then careful insulin management can be accomplished with routine self-monitoring of blood sugar and insulin adjustments.

The Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center team works closely with the obstetrician and/or primary care physician to assist the pregnant woman in the management of diabetes.

A Gestational Diabetes Education Program consultation may include

1. Introduction to Gestational diabetes
2. Medical nutritional therapy
3. An explanation of how food, exercise, and stress affect blood glucose levels and the baby
4. Self-monitoring of blood glucose - this may allow more flexibility in meal planning. (Loaner blood glucose monitors may be available at the Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center)
5. Self-monitoring of urine for ketones
6. Rationale for tight glucose control
7. Insulin use - if needed
8. Prevention, recognition, and treatment of hypoglycemia
9. When to call your doctor
l0. Support groups and other community resources
