Dr. Jurand Named Medical Director of

Behavioral Health Services at WCH

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 22, 2004)–Joseph A. Jurand, M.D., has been named medical director of Behavioral Health Services (BHS) at Washington County Hospital.

A board certified psychiatrist, Dr. Jurand joined the staff of BHS in December 2001. In addition to overseeing a current staff of five psychiatrists and one nurse practitioner, Dr. Jurand is responsible for his own inpatient and outpatient consultations. He plans to add two psychiatrists to his staff.

In the two-and-a-half years that Dr. Jurand has been at BHS, he has helped to establish an outpatient ambulatory detoxification program and has served on several organizational committees and taskforces.

The son of the late Dr. Julian Jurand, Dr. Joseph Jurand spent his early years on the grounds of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., where his father was an attending psychiatrist. After receiving his medical degree from Howard University, College of Medicine in Washington, D.C., Dr. Jurand returned to St. Elizabeth’s to complete his residency in psychiatry as part of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) program.

Dr. Jurand’s main areas of interest are the psychiatric treatment of chronic pain and addictions counseling. He treats patients of all ages, from childhood to geriatric.

Prior to joining BHS, Dr. Jurand was lead psychiatrist at Shenandoah Valley Behavioral Health Services in Martinsburg, WV, where he established a psychiatric division within the Shenandoah Valley Medical System. He also served as the associate chairman and director of West Virginia University’s Gateway Center at City Hospital in Martinsburg for six years and was in private practice for fifteen years.

Married and the father of two daughters, Dr. Jurand serves on the board of directors at Turning Point, the Potomac Classical Youth Ballet Company, and Antietam Health Services Foundation. His interests include community theater and music.
