Reflections of Symmetry Offers A Non-Surgical Alternative to Breast Reconstruction

10/1/2003

Reflections of Symmetry is pleased to offer the Radiant Impressions™ custom breast prosthesis. “We are excited about the opportunity to bring this innovative product to the women of our community who are looking for the latest advancement and newest alternative to surgical breast reconstruction,” noted Terri Hadley, manager of Reflections of Symmetry.

The Radiant Impressions custom breast prosthesis is lightweight, durable, and has a natural appearance. For the single mastectomy patient, the prosthesis is a duplicate of the existing breast. A cast is made of the existing breast so that the form replicates the unique shape for each woman, then a cast is made of the surgical site so that the base of the breast form can be adhered for a precise fit to the chest wall. The breast form can even be matched to skin tone to further enhance its natural look. Custom prostheses can also be made for the bilateral patient.

The Radiant Impressions custom breast prosthesis began as a labor of love by inventor, Dr. Terry Ferguson, for his wife, Frances, following her mastectomy. After finding the surgical and prosthetic options left much to be desired, Dr. Ferguson, retired orthodontist, told his wife, “let’s go home, I can invent a better wheel.” He experimented with different materials and techniques before arriving at the custom breast prosthesis now marketed as Radiant Impressions.

One fit with this custom breast prosthesis and a woman feels confident swimming in a swimsuit of her choice or even wearing the most delicate bra. “This custom breast prosthesis was a gift to me with the hope of giving me back a sense of wholeness and to renew my confidence and self-esteem,” noted Frances Ferguson. “It did all of those things, and now is available to other women that have suffered from breast cancer surgery with the hope that it will improve their lives, just as it has mine.”

Reflections of Symmetry, a small chain of highly specialized boutiques catering to women who have experienced hair loss or had breast surgery, has been in business since 1996. Reflections of Symmetry carries a wide variety of products, including wigs, hats, turbans, prosthetic breast forms, surgical bras, swimwear, and corrective make-up. Many different product lines are carried, to ensure that each client’s needs are met exactly. In January 2001, Antietam Health Services purchased Reflections of Symmetry, making it a part of the Washington County Health System.

Reflections of Symmetry is dedicated to customer service on a personal level. Personal consultation appointments are available to each client, allowing each woman to examine and try on products in a private and comfortable environment. “Our success is based upon our empathetic approach to women with cancer,” stated Hadley. “All of our employees are either cancer survivors or have had experience caring for a family member with cancer.”

Currently there are four Reflections boutiques: Frederick Medical Center in Frederick, MD; Claudia Mayer Cancer Center in Columbia, MD; The Women’s Place in Westminster, MD; and Robinwood Medical Center, Suite 243 Retail Center in Hagerstown, MD. Hours vary by location.
