Trauma Center

Washington County Hospital Trauma Services was designated by the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medicine Services & Systems as an area-wide trauma service in the state emergency medical system in 1981. There are several levels of trauma center, reflecting the facility’s access to specialists and ability to provide care for serious injuries. As a level III trauma center, we have the resources to care for most trauma patients. Individuals with severe injuries may be transferred to a level I or II trauma center.

Trauma centers are designed to treat patients who have serious injuries, either accidental or intentional. These injuries may be due to motor vehicle accidents, falls, being unintentionally struck by an object, or assaults. Traumatic injuries often require complex, multidisciplinary care.

Our trauma center is part of an organized, statewide system that is designed to treat trauma patients who have been transported to the hospital by helicopter or ambulance.
