The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a lifestyle modification
and rehabilitation program for patients recovering from a myocardial
infarction, coronary bypass surgery or angioplasty.
The program consists of a three day per week monitored
exercise program supervised by a registered nurse in which the duration
and intensity of exercise is increased over a 12 week period. Patients
are progressed through program based on their heart rate response
as well as the Borg Scale scores.
In addition to the exercise portion of the program,
patients are encouraged to attend the seven, one hour, education
classes which focus on lifestyle modification and compliance. Topics
include heart healthy eating, fats and cholesterol, stress management,
home exercise guidelines, risk factors for heart disease and a one
hour class taught by a pharmacist on the more common cardiac medications.
A dietician is also available for dietary consultations on patients.
