  Advance Directives

Advance Directives—an important step in planning for future healthcare needs.

Today many people are concerned about the medical care they would receive should they become gravely ill and unable to communicate their wishes. Everyone has the right to make personal decisions about their healthcare and an advance directive allows you to make known your wishes, while you're able to. That's why a growing number of people are taking an active role in planning for their care before they become seriously ill.

Susan Lyons, R.N.

Talking with your family, friends and your physician about what you would want for future healthcare needs is an important first step.

Then, take the time while you are still healthy to put your preferences in writing by completing the documents called advance directives to make known your healthcare decisions. Advance directive documents can eliminate emotional distress for family and loved ones when decisions about your treatment options need to be made.

If you would like to learn more about these documents, please click here. You will find information about Maryland law regarding advance directives along with an advance directive form. Should you need help in discussing the issues or help in filling out the form please contact Susan Lyons (301-790-8271) [email protected].
