On Thursday, November 12, women will have the opportunity to address issues that concern them the most with local and national educators. The program is hosted by “Mr. Divabetic” Max Szadek and features a touch of glamour, music videos, a fun feather boa workout, healthy lifestyle tips, interactive games, diabetes education, and prize giveaways. After watching his boss battle diabetes alone, Max Szadek, longtime assistant to singer Luther Vandross, created the Divabetic program in 2004. Szadek fuses entertainment, pop music, and fashion into an inspirational forum for women coping with this disease. “This event is meant to bring women living with diabetes together so that they no longer feel alone,” explained Cindy Earle, RN, community health education coordinator with the Jack and Anna Hershey Education Center. “Our hope is that they will leave feeling more confident about caring for themselves in a healthy manner.” Caring for your diabetes or for a loved one with diabetes is extremely important. You can reduce the risk of developing serious diabetes-related complications, such as blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations, and nerve damage. Pass the boa! We encourage women to bring other “divas-in-training”—your mom, your sister, your co-worker, best friend, or roommate—with you and enjoy learning about diabetes from a diva’s perspective. The cost for the program is $25. For more information or to register, call 1-888-803-1518.
