  Support Services

We want our patients to be able to focus on getting well. That’s why the John R. Marsh Cancer Center provides an array of services, and why we consider it so important to help our patients and their families with the non-medical aspects of fighting cancer.

A talented and dedicated group of specialists provides unlimited assistance with the social, financial, and psychological demands that come with a cancer diagnosis.

Kidwell-England Cancer Resource Center
Located off the waiting room at the Marsh Cancer Center, the Kidwell-England Cancer Resource Center houses a variety of cancer-related materials. Some of these may be borrowed, while others are for visitors to keep. Materials are available in a variety of formats, including books, videos, brochures, audio tapes, and interactive CD-ROM programs. This Research Center is open to the public and volunteers are available to assist in locating information. The Center also provides free Internet access for research.

Some patients and family members find it especially helpful that the Center’s staff or volunteers will gladly collect and prepare information from reliable sources. We will be happy to prepare this information for mailing or pick-up. To request print information or an internet search related to cancer care, please e-mail us at jmcancer@wchsys.org.

Counseling
For many of our patients, the shock of a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. This is a natural reaction, but it can sometimes make it difficult to cope with the stresses of fighting this disease.

To help patients and their families come to terms with the diagnosis and navigate the maze of emotions and challenges that follow, the Marsh Cancer Center’s experienced social worker steps in. Most patients meet with the social worker for the first time shortly after they check in at the Center; she then follows their progress through therapy, assisting with challenges and concerns as they arise.

Financial Assistance

At the John R. Marsh Cancer Center, we believe that patients have enough to deal with when they hear a cancer diagnosis without having to worry about bills or financial issues. So that our patients and their families can concentrate on what’s really important – getting well – we offer generous assistance in managing any financial issues that arise during treatment.

Our financial counselor helps answer questions about insurance issues, addresses concerns or billing problems with insurers, and works with patients and their families on payment issues of any kind, regardless of whether they have health insurance. Patients can apply for the hospital’s financial assistance program through the Center, and we have a special program for patients who cannot afford the medications needed for their treatment.

For patients who are unable to work during their treatment, it can be especially hard to make ends meet. Our financial counselor and social worker also work together to help patients apply for any appropriate community-based programs that are available, including Medicaid and Social Security Disability.
