Having cancer is hard. Finding help shouldn’t be. The patient resource navigator is a new position in the John R. Marsh Cancer Center created through a partnership between Washington County Hospital and the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS). The patient resource navigator will help cancer patients, their family members, and caregivers access community and national resources, including the American Cancer Society’s free programs. Depending upon each patient’s needs, the navigator offers individualized personal guidance to connect patients with transportation assistance, help with home healthcare, nutritional counseling, medication assistance, and information on child care, support groups, and cancer treatments. This free program is available to anyone regardless of location, diagnosis, treatment, or financial status. No referral is needed. Because so many people do not know about the services and programs that are available to help cancer patients, the position was originally designed to seek out patients who need and want assistance but are unaware of available resources. However, the patient resource navigator will also assist other healthcare providers, staff, and even the general public with non-clinical issues. For more information, contact Angela Heare by phone at 301-790-8145, or by pager at 301-790-8888 #3230.
