Obesity is one of America's most serious epidemics. Over two-thirds of U.S. citizens are overweight, an alarming statistic that continues to grow. Addressing this need, the Center for Bariatric Surgery at Washington County Hospital opened its doors in the summer of 2008. Since then, surgeons have performed more than eighty-five bariatric procedures. Every month, approximately twenty-five people inquire about our program, and about 200 people are enrolled in the program at any given time.

“Patients have been so excited about the program starting here at Washington County Hospital,” said Dr. Scot Currie, board-certified general surgeon and member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. That excitement reflects a critical need. Those who seek bariatric treatment are typically at least 100 pounds overweight and have been unsuccessful with conventional weight loss attempts such as dieting and exercise. Health, not vanity, brings people to our Center. Bariatric surgery is often the final attempt to end obesity.

Those afflicted by obesity often have life-threatening conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea. “Our main reason for performing these surgeries is to either address and correct pre-existing co-morbidities, or to prevent new conditions from arising,” explained Dr. Currie. According to Cherish Eby, physician assistant for the program, many diabetic patients experience diabetic remission one month after bariatric surgery. She added, “Our patients tell us they can’t remember a time they have felt this energetic.”

The Center for Bariatric Surgery offers minimally invasive gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding procedures. Our comprehensive, patient-centered program provides

  • a private information session to discuss surgery alternatives and insurance eligibility;
  • medical consultation and a pre-surgery diet program;
  • nutritional counseling and education to support new eating habits;
  • continuous medical check-ups to monitor health and weight loss success;
  • support group meetings to share accomplishments and questions with peers.

In addition to five bariatric surgeons, our multi-disciplinary support team includes a physician assistant, program coordinator, psychologist, dietician, and exercise physiologist.
